kOLTER sUMMER rEADING
2024-2025
For those new to Kolter or to the Summer Reading Program, this is a fun activity to keep the students reading during the summer break. Follow the Bingo sheet and instructions throughout the summer and earn prizes when school resumes! In the past there have been T-shirts, popsicle parties and other fun trinkets the students can earn. Feel free to reach out with any questions regarding this program.

Please note that the Kolter Summer Reading Program format has changed this year; we hope our new Bingo Board will encourage lots of reading this summer! Make sure to check that you fill out a reading log AND complete the correct BINGO board for the grade you will enter in Fall 2024.
Requirements and Prizes
Level 1: Submit a reading log and complete a BINGO (5 squares in a row diagonally, horizontally, or vertically)

Level 2: Submit a reading log and complete 2 BINGOs of 5 squares in a row each
*Students may need 9 or 10 squares covered to complete 2 BINGOs depending on which BINGOs are covered.

Important Information
- Participation in the Kolter Summer Reading Program is completely voluntary. Participating students should turn in their Kolter Summer Reading BINGO Card with at least one BINGO marked (5 squares in a row) and their Summer Reading Log by Friday, August 31st to the box in the front office in order to receive credit.
- You may count books read independently, books read by/with a grownup, or audiobooks. You know best the type of reading and book level that will benefit your student.
- A reading session to cover a square should be at least 15 minutes. Squares may be colored or X-ed.
- The same book can be used to mark off more than one square if it was read for multiple 15 minute sessions or it was read more than one time. For example, you could use the book Magic Tree House: Dinosaurs Before Dark to mark off “Read a book in a series,” “Read on a Monday,” and “Read a fairytale or fantasy” if you read it across three different reading sessions or days.
- A parent or guardian should initial in each square that the student completes. You are not expected to complete all of the squares unless a student would like to reach level 3 prizes.
- Please fill out the reading log to help you track books you read over the summer. You do not need to continue tracking books read beyond the one page reading log or list the same book more than once.
- You may have more BINGO squares covered than books on your reading log due to book length or repeated readings.
- It is expected that students who submit the whole BINGO board covered for level 3 prizes will have at least 5 books on their reading log.
- Reminder that HISD students have free Houston public library cards to check out books all summer using their student ID number.
